Safety Precaution

Please observe the following precautions before and when you try your lesson on snow.

1. Ensure your skis or snowboard does fit so that they function correctly.
2. At all times, follow the Skier Responsibility Code. See listed left on this page.

GREEN groomed beginner slopes
Ski Tips:
1. First learn the wedge or snowplow. You need it to be able to stop!!!
A wedge or snowplow position is where the front or tips of the skis are close together, and the
backs or tails of the skis are spread apart.

2. On a very gentle hill, say at the bottom of the ski mountain, aim your skis at a slight angle
down the slope. Allow your skis to slide across the slope. Lean towards the mountain and stand
more heavily on the hill ski, compared with the valley ski. Otherwhise you drop off the mountain.

3. Keep your skis parallel at all times. Snowplow if you need to stop!!!

4. To make a turn stick your ski stick in the snow.
For left turn use your left stick, for right turn use your right stick. Always turn towards the valley.
A left turn is made when your present valley ski is your left leg. You need to bring your weight from
your right ski to your left ski.
A right turn is made when your present valley ski is your richt leg. You need to bring your weight
from your left ski to your right ski.

5. Now you have to learn how to use a ski lift to get higher up the mountain. To get on the
lift is easy. There is always a friendly ski resort person to help you. To get off the lift is the rough
part. Nobody is there to help you and you make the day of the friendly ski resort person who was
helping you at the beginning of the lift when you fall flat on your face trying to get off the lift.
Good luck kiddo!!

Snowboard Tips:
1. You are going to fall, big way!!! That is probably not news to you, but you will have to get used
to falling forward and bakcward, instead of from side to side in skiing.

2. It is a good idea to practice just staying on the board. If you are used to water surfing or
skateboarding, then you will have the advantage of knowing how to balance your body while
standing sideways on the snowboard. Generally, you will stand on the board with your left foot
forward. It will take some time to find your comfort zone.

3. Remember that you don't even have ski poles to help you navigate the slippery slopes.
Your total control--steering and speed--will rely on your bodily movements as well as on the
positioning of your body weight.

4. Unless you are on a kamikaze mission, you should find a relatively flat area to begin on.
Get on your board and shove off slowly. Pay close attention to your body and your snowboard.
Practice starting and stopping. Then, practice turning to the left and then to the right. As you
catch on to what you are doing, and progress in your skills, you can then increase your speed.

BLUE groomed intermediate slopes
Ski Tips - Phantom Turns:
Start on very gentle terrain, so you can work on the timing of your movements and turns without
picking up too much speed. Aim both skis straight downhill with your feet close together.
As you start sliding, lighten one foot and quickly tip it toward the little-toe edge so that edge just
brushes against the snow. Immediately, set that foot back onto the snow and balance on its
little-toe edge. Simultaneously, lighten and tip the other foot in the opposite direction. As soon as
it is tipped over, balance on its little-toe edge and lighten the first foot. The stance ski remains
passive through the turn. Avoid the urge to twist, edge, or push on the stance ski, since any of
these actions will prevent engagement of the stance ski. Keeping the feet close together will
facilitate the quick balance transfers that are required.
When you can link at least ten turns with clean balance transfers, consistent speed, and

consistent turn size, go to slightly steeper terrain. Use the same movements to link short turns
on the steeper terrain. You’ll need to tip the free ski far toward the little-toe edge to maintain
speed control on steeper terrain.

BLACK advanced and expert slopes
Ski Tips:
Lack of confidence in your ability to ski difficult terrain can quickly take your technique from good
to worse. Sometimes, the biggest challenge to skiing any terrain is fear and doubt in your skiing
abilities. With the Skier’s Edge you’ll capture the feeling of making confident, powerful turns that
you’ll take to the slopes. You’ll no longer be skiing tentatively in difficult terrain.

skiedge@skiersedge.com
Many skiers remain advanced only on groomed slopes. What is required to be an expert on the
whole mountain is power and confidence. If you use the Skier's Edge everyday, you will gain the
power and confidence to leave the groomed trails and ski the whole mountain. …The Skier's Edge
is as essential to skiing as skis, boots and poles..
